We're writing this sitting in our living room, surrounded by the mess of one of our favorite days of the year - December 25th. There is candy and empty boxes and gifts stacked in piles, but as we look around at this, we're reminded of one of our favorite quotes from writer Andy Rooney: "One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas Day. Don't clean it up too quickly."
So instead, we're sitting back and enjoying a few more slow, stress-free days with our families. Leading up to Christmas, we watched countless Christmas movies, like Elf, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone (1 & 2), and The Santa Clause; and on Christmas Eve, we kept our tradition of watching Love Actually. We've watched this movie as a couple every Christmas Eve since we got married - we can pretty much quote the whole thing.
Christmas Day is also John's birthday, so when we woke up yesterday, we opened our stockings and our gifts, then had John's favorite birthday lunch: his dad's homemade lasagna. Seriously, it's the best lasagna we've ever had, and we eat the leftovers for days. After lunch, we headed to Erica's parents' house where we cut into John's ice cream cake (mint chocolate chip, of course), and a few hours later, dug into tamales, rice and beans.
We're very lucky to be surrounded by so many who love us enough to give us Christmas gifts, but thinking back on yesterday, it's not the presents we will remember and cherish the most. It's the time and traditions we kept with our wonderful tribe of people. Our moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents, nieces and pups.
We hope you had a fantastic holiday as well - filled with good food, fun traditions and most importantly, with love.
